How ELO Rating Works
Basic Principle
The ELO system calculates the expected outcome of matches based on the rating difference between players. When you win against a higher-rated opponent, you gain more points than winning against a lower-rated opponent.
Rating Gain
Win against higher-rated players for maximum rating gains (+15 to +32 points)
Expected Win
Win against similar-rated players for moderate gains (+8 to +16 points)
Rating Loss
Lose against lower-rated players for maximum rating loss (-16 to -32 points)
Rating Calculation Examples
You (1400) defeat opponent (1700) → Expected probability: 15%
You (1500) defeat opponent (1520) → Expected probability: 47%
You (1600) lose to opponent (1300) → Expected probability: 85%
